Andrea Sommer

Artist Statement

In my artistic practice, I consistently explore themes of connection among human beings, social dynamics, and nature, forming the foundation of my creative journey.

I am intrigued by the spectrums of gender, sexuality, and corporeality, and my work engages with their fluid boundaries while playfully challenging existing concepts.
My exploration extends to the poetic and political aspects of kitchens and experimental fermentation, allowing me to unravel the web of human-nature connections. While I delve into the social aspect of shared meals, I also investigate microorganisms that blur the lines between our bodies and the environment. This curiosity has led me to study network systems in nature, where I unveil the social relationships within ecosystems.

These various facets of my work serve as lenses through which I perceive the profound connections uniting humanity and nature. My artistic process is a collaborative endeavor encompassing reading, writing, research, installation, cooking, sound, and performance.
